The Whiting Lane Food Pantry: Neighbors Helping Neighbors
The Whiting Lane School Code states that “Whiting Lane citizens are respectful and responsible, make good choices, and we always take care of each other.”
We believe that a strong community takes care of its own. This principle drives the Whiting Lane Food Pantry, a program run entirely by the Whiting Lane PTO that provides weekly bags of groceries to families right here in our school community.
The Whiting Lane PTO Food Pantry needs your help to continue providing this service. Whether you can donate your time helping us shop for groceries or assemble weekly grocery bags, donate non-perishable foods at one of our food drives, or contribute financially, any support is greatly appreciated.
What Is the Whiting Lane PTO Food Pantry?
The Whiting Lane PTO Food Pantry is a volunteer-powered program that assembles and distributes weekly grocery bags to Whiting Lane families facing food insecurity. Each bag is packed with non-perishable food items that meet specific health and macronutrient goals by providing groceries consisting of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and lean proteins.
The program runs entirely on the generosity of our community through donations, volunteer time, and a whole lot of heart.
Each week, the pantry serves between 30 and 40 families right here in our school community. Each grocery bag costs approximately $10-15 to assemble, meaning the pantry spends roughly $400 a week to provide this assistance. Every dollar contributed goes directly toward groceries for families who need them.
Food insecurity touches more families than most of us realize, and it doesn't always look the way we might expect. Many families in our community are facing real economic pressures including rising costs, reduced government benefits, and the everyday challenges of making ends meet. SNAP benefits have continued to be cut in recent years, meaning more and more families are turning to community resources like food pantries to fill the gap.
For many families, a weekly bag of groceries makes a real and tangible difference. By keeping this program close to home, within our own school community, we are able to address food insecurity with care, dignity, and discretion. This is neighbor helping neighbor, and it is one of the most direct ways the Whiting Lane community can show up for one another.
Why It Matters
What Makes the Whiting Lane Food Pantry Unique
The Whiting Lane PTO Food Pantry fills a gap that many other local resources simply cannot. Here is what sets our in-school pantry apart:
No income verification required. Any Whiting Lane family can participate. We believe that asking for help should be as easy as possible.
Weekly distribution. Families receive groceries every week during the school year. For families facing food insecurity, that consistency makes a difference.
Convenience and dignity. Groceries are distributed directly through the school, making it easy for families to receive support as part of their normal school routine, quietly, conveniently, and without stigma.
When does the Food Pantry operate?
The Whiting Lane Food Pantry actively runs throughout the school year, distributing bags to families on a weekly basis while school is in session.
How Can You Help?
The Food Pantry depends on the generosity of our entire community to keep running. There are many ways to get involved, and every contribution makes a difference.
"Adopt a Family" Donations.
One of the most direct ways to help is a financial contribution tied to a specific impact. For example, $40 feeds one family for a month. Whether you give that amount or something different, every dollar goes straight to groceries.
Donate reusable grocery bags.
We always need reusable grocery bags to pack and distribute donations (such as Target bags). If you have extra clean bags at home, we will happily take them off your hands!
Restaurant Fundraiser Nights.
The Food Pantry partners with local restaurants for fundraiser nights where a portion of proceeds comes back to the pantry. These are a fun way to support the program while enjoying a meal out. Watch for announcements from the PTO about upcoming restaurant nights.
Business and Community Partnerships.
Local businesses play a growing role in supporting the pantry, whether through monetary donations, food contributions, or other creative partnerships. If you own a business or know someone who might want to get involved, please reach out.
Donate food or household items.
We accept non-perishable food items on an ongoing basis. The easiest way to donate is to bring your items to the Whiting Lane front office. Simply hand your bag to someone at the front desk and they will take it from there. From time to time, we also organize food drives with additional drop-off locations, such as the car drop-off lane before and after school. Keep an eye out for announcements about those events. When shopping, buying items in multiples of 5 or 10 helps us keep the bags consistent across all the families we serve, but any amount is always welcome.
Volunteer your time.
Whether you enjoy grocery shopping or prefer to help with bagging and organizing food, there is a role for you. The core weekly commitment is approximately 4 to 5 hours, but there are also smaller, flexible ways to pitch in. Volunteers are the backbone of this program and new helpers are always welcome.
Grants and Institutional Giving.
The Food Pantry actively researches and applies for grants to help fund the program. If you have experience in grant writing or connections to foundations that support food security, we would love to hear from you.
